Oxalic Acid Crystals
NEW UNTREATED Non-Weathered Wood*
Make a solution with a one pound container of Oxalic Acid Crystals sold by Blairstown Distributors in four gallons of water; a stiff-bristled nylon brush; a garden pump sprayer; and power-washing equipment set below 500 psi.
Mix Oxalic Acid crystals into very warm water. Working in manageable sections from the bottom all the way to the top, wet the wood with water, and then generously apply Oxalic Acid solution from the bottom up using the garden pump sprayer.
Keep the surface wet for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not let the solution dry on the wood. When stubborn areas of Mold, Mildew, Dirt, Footprints, Band Strap marks etc., exist use the nylon brush to work the Oxalic Acid solution into the wood. After 15 to 20 minutes, lightly power-wash the Oxalic Acid solution off with clean water from the top down several times.
To avoid wood damage and achieve maximum effectiveness, make sure the pressure is set below 500 psi, and keep the nozzle of the power washer approximately one foot from the surface. A garden hose is not sufficient for this purpose, as it typically provides a maximum of 60 psi. Measure the pH of the rinse water at several places to make sure the water run-off is between, 6.0 – 7.0 pH to assure that all of the oxalic acid is removed.
If all of the Oxalic Acid solution is not removed, some woods will develop a darker shade. The pH strips from 6 to 9 are available at local drug stores, pool supply stores or discount stores. Let the surface dry for at least three days before applying WOODguard.
A one pound container will cover approximately 800 square feet (4 ounces per gallon of WOODguard)
